Older pets often slow down so gradually that we put it down to 'getting on'. A lot of that stiffness and grumpiness is arthritis - and it's very treatable.
Cats in particular are experts at hiding pain - they won't limp, they just do less. Small changes like struggling with stairs, missing the litter tray or sleeping more can all point to sore joints.

When is my pet considered 'senior'?
It varies with size and species - many cats and smaller dogs are seniors from around 8-10 years, larger dogs a little earlier. From then, twice-yearly checks are ideal.
How can I tell if my older pet is in pain?
Look for slowing down, stiffness after rest, reluctance to jump or climb, changes in mood or appetite, or toileting accidents. Any of these are worth a check.
Is arthritis treatable?
Yes - with a mix of pain relief, joint support, weight control and small home changes, most arthritic pets get a real quality-of-life boost.
