Microchipping
A microchip is a tiny, permanent ID about the size of a grain of rice. If your pet ever goes missing, it's the surest way for a vet or shelter to get them home to you.
The chip carries a unique number linked to your contact details on the national register. It never needs charging or replacing, and it can't fall off like a collar tag.
Already microchipped but moved house or changed phone number? Keeping your details current on the register is just as important as the chip itself - we can help you check.

Microchipping - your questions
Does microchipping hurt my pet?
It feels like a normal vaccination - a quick pinch. Most pets barely notice. We can also do it while your pet is desexed and under anaesthetic.
Is microchipping compulsory in New Zealand?
Most dogs must be microchipped and registered under the Dog Control Act. Microchipping cats isn't compulsory but is strongly recommended.
What if my contact details change?
Update them on the NZCAR as soon as you can - an out-of-date chip can't get your pet home. Ask us if you're not sure how.
