Pet Export to Australia

Pet Export to Australia

Moving across the Tasman with your cat or dog? 3 Stone Vets is an MPI listed export clinic for cats and dogs travelling to Australia, so we can take care of the veterinary side and your pet's export certificate right here in Te Awamutu.

Australia is one of the more straightforward destinations for New Zealand pets - no import permit is needed for cats and dogs travelling from New Zealand. Your pet does still need an export certificate, which can be completed and issued by an MPI listed veterinary practice like ours.

A few situations need extra steps. Cats and dogs that were imported into New Zealand must have lived here for at least 180 days before they can travel to Australia, and imported dogs also need a Leishmania test, done after they have been living in New Zealand for at least 21 days. Some trips need an official assurance certificate from an MPI official veterinarian instead - we'll let you know if that applies to your pet.

MPI recommends using a registered pet exporter to help arrange tests, treatments, flights and crates, and most airlines prefer to deal with one. Requirements can change, so check MPI's current guidance for cats and dogs to Australia, and talk to us as early as you can.
